Mill City in Minneapolis, Minnesota is a brilliant museum built on the foundation of a horrific disaster. The old mill complex along with the adjacent Mill Ruins Park are thought to be among the most haunted locations in the city - not to mention the city's Lakewood Cemetary, where all the victims are buried.
On May 2, 1878, a spark ignited flour dust and triggered a massive explosion at the Washburn A Mill. 18 workers were killed in the explosion and the ensuing fire that ravaged the complex.
The tragedy, known as the Great Mill Disaster, would drive reform in the ever-critical US milling industry. It would also highlight other occupational hazards associated with milling, such as Baker's Lung.
