AMT Models

AMT, originally Aluminum Model Toys, was founded in 1948 by West Gallogly Sr. in Troy, Michigan. The company began by producing promotional models for Ford dealerships, offering miniature replicas painted in official factory colors. These early models were made of aluminum before quickly transitioning to plastic, which allowed for greater detail and variety.  

By the 1960s, AMT had become a leader in the model kit industry, introducing its famous “3-in-1” kits that allowed builders to create stock, custom, or hot rod versions of the same car. This innovation made AMT kits highly versatile and popular among hobbyists. The company also expanded into trucks, fire engines, and licensed pop culture subjects, including Star Trek models.  

AMT’s catalog is dominated by 1/25 scale cars and trucks, covering classic American vehicles such as the Chevrolet Camaro, Ford Mustang, Dodge Charger, and countless others. Many kits feature opening hoods, detailed engines, chrome-plated parts, and authentic decals. Over the years, AMT has also produced movie and TV vehicles, including the “Christine” Plymouth Fury, the Batmobile, and Star Trek’s Galileo shuttlecraft.  

Ownership of AMT has changed hands several times. It was acquired by Lesney in 1978, then by Ertl in 1983, and eventually became part of Round 2 LLC in 2012. Today, Round 2 continues to produce AMT kits, reissuing classic molds while introducing new subjects to keep the brand fresh and appealing to collectors.
