Amtrak developed the Viewliner sleeper in the late 1980s to replace its aging heritage cars, choosing a single-level design so the equipment could clear the tunnels and tight structures of eastern routes. Production cars were built by Amerail and Morrison-Knudsen and entered service in 1995. Inside they offer roomettes, bedrooms, and an accessible bedroom with room for a wheelchair or mobility device, and the distinctive double row of windows makes them easy to spot on trains still running today.

This Walthers Proto release (920-11306) wears a realistic plated body finish with officially licensed Amtrak graphics in the Amtrak Phase VI Early paint scheme, with car numbers supplied on an included decal sheet. This is the unlighted version of the car. It features improved tooling, full interiors, improved diaphragms, a GSI metal truck for electrical pickup, factory-installed wire grab irons, a detailed underbody, correct 36 scale inch RP-25 turned metal wheels, and Proto MAX metal knuckle couplers. The sleeper comes ready to run straight from the box.
